Wallhop, wallclip, ladder flick: what each term actually means

These three get used interchangeably and are not the same thing. What separates them, which are safe to rely on, and how to tell which one a section is asking for.

Why the confusion matters

If a section is asking for a ladder flick and you are attempting a wallhop, you can practise for an hour and get nowhere — not because your timing is off, but because you are performing the wrong technique. The terms get used loosely in comments and video titles, and the result is people grinding the wrong skill.

The distinction is also practical when reading advice. A tip that is true for wallhopping may be irrelevant or actively wrong for wallclipping, because the two rely on different engine behaviour.

Wallhop

Ordinary movement inputs plus the humanoid's landing detection. You hold jump, alternate pressing into two facing surfaces, and each contact returns your jump so you gain height. Nothing unusual is happening — you are using the same mechanic that makes a held jump key bounce you continuously on flat ground.

This is the safest and most portable of the three. It works broadly across Roblox games wherever default humanoid behaviour is intact, it does not depend on which character rig you are using, and it is unambiguously a legitimate skill. Entire obby genres are built around it, and the category's flagship trainer has over 257 million visits.

If you are learning one of these three, learn this one. It is the foundation the others sit alongside.

Ladder flick

A truss technique, not a wall technique. You make contact with a truss — Roblox's lattice ladder part — which puts your character into a climbing state. Rather than climbing or jumping straight off the face, you flick the camera to the direction you actually want to go and jump in the same beat, launching along an axis the truss does not point at.

The key mechanical difference from wallhopping is that held jump does not chain from the climbing state. A flick needs one deliberate press at the right moment, which is why wallhop instincts actively work against you here.

Flicks pair with wallhops in real routes constantly — a tower will give you a shaft, then a truss where the exit is behind you, then another shaft. The community's long-standing practice map, gelly8ean's Wall Hop and Ladder Flick Practice with 18.2 million visits, trains both together for exactly that reason. Like wallhopping, it uses ordinary inputs and is uncontroversially legitimate.

Wallclip

Different in kind from the other two. Wallclipping depends on how a specific character rig interacts with collision geometry, rather than on the humanoid's landing detection. The dedicated practice place for it, WallClip Practice, specifies R6 — Roblox's older six-part rig — in its title, because the behaviour differs from R15.

We do not publish a step-by-step for it, and it is worth being direct about why. It is rig- and geometry-dependent to a degree that makes general instructions misleading; advice that works on R6 may not transfer to R15 at all. And it sits closer to the line where a movement technique becomes a collision quirk. Wallhopping is unambiguously a skill. Wallclipping is more debatable, and how a given community treats it varies.

What is worth knowing is the distinction itself. If a wallhop keeps failing on a section that others clear easily, consider that they may be using a different technique rather than better timing — and check whether the game uses R6 or R15 before applying any wallclip advice you find.

A corner hop is a wallhop performed on two surfaces meeting at an angle rather than facing each other in parallel. The corner seam gives more consistent contact, which makes it slightly more forgiving — and a good place to drill wallhop rhythm before attempting parallel shafts.
