Wallhop beginner guide

If you have never landed a wallhop, start here. This page is the short version of the whole site, in the order that actually works.

Updated August 2026

Do these two things first

  1. 1

    Cap your framerate at 60

Higher FPS makes wallhopping harder. This surprises everyone, and it comes straight from the developer of Wall Hop Practice — the most-played wallhop trainer on Roblox. Set the cap in Roblox's settings menu.

  2. 2

    Enable shift lock

Turn on shift lock switch in Roblox settings — it is a platform setting, so the in-game toggle does nothing until you do. Then press Shift on PC, X on Xbox, or Square on PlayStation.

What a wallhop actually is

Roblox's default character does not need you to re-press jump in order to jump again. Hold the jump key on flat ground and you will bounce continuously — the humanoid jumps the instant it registers a landing. Try it now; it takes ten seconds and it is the foundation of everything below.

A wallhop is that same behaviour applied sideways. Pressing into a wall while you rise gives you a brief contact with a surface the game treats as standable — usually a lip, a seam, or the top edge of a part. That contact counts as a landing, so your held jump key returns your jump, and you gain height. Press into the opposite wall, catch again, gain more.

This tells you what you actually control. Not the jump timing — the engine handles that. You control two things only: how far from the wall you are when you make contact, and when you switch which wall you press toward. Every real piece of wallhop advice is about one of those two variables.

The path, in order

  1. 1

    Fix your client settings first

Cap your framerate at 60 and enable shift lock switch in the Roblox settings menu. Higher FPS makes wallhopping measurably harder, per the developer of the most-played wallhop trainer on the platform. These two changes remove the most common causes of failure before you attempt anything.

  2. 2

Understand what the engine is doing

Holding the jump key makes Roblox re-jump the instant it registers a landing. A wallhop is that behaviour applied sideways: pressing into a wall gives you a brief contact that counts as a landing, which returns your jump. You are not timing jumps — you are timing direction switches.

  3. 3

    Land one catch, twenty times

Do not attempt a climb. Hold jump, press one direction into one wall, and look for a single extra jump. Twenty consecutive successes on the left, then twenty on the right. Most people are worse on one side and this is how you find out.

  4. 4

    Chain two catches

Catch on the left, then release that key and press the opposite one in a single motion — no overlap, no pause at neutral. The second catch takes you higher than any single jump could. Two chained catches is a real wallhop.

  5. 5

    Measure your reliable width

Find the widest gap you clear nine times out of ten. That number is your benchmark and turns vague inconsistency into something you can train against and re-measure weekly.

  6. 6

    Extend, then generalise

Build from two catches to six, practising below your reliable width rather than at your ceiling. Then take it to a map you have never played. If your success rate collapses, you memorised geometry rather than learning the technique.

Beginner FAQ

How long does it take to learn to wallhop in Roblox?

With the correct client setup, most people land a first two-hop climb within an hour of focused practice. Reliable longer climbs take days rather than hours, because it is a motor skill and short spaced sessions beat one long grind.

What is the single most common beginner mistake?

Tapping the jump key instead of holding it. Holding jump lets the engine time the re-jump for you, which turns two timing problems into one. The second most common is holding both strafe keys during the switch, which cancels your horizontal travel and drops you down the shaft.

Why do my wallhops work sometimes and not others?

Because the wall contact you rely on is marginal, so small differences in your distance from the wall decide whether the game registers a landing at all. Inconsistency early on is a positioning problem far more often than a timing problem.

Should I lower my FPS to learn wallhopping?

Yes — cap it at 60. This is counter-intuitive and it comes directly from the developer of Wall Hop Practice, who states that higher framerates make wallhopping much harder. If your wallhops got worse after you unlocked your framerate, that is the cause.

Do I need shift lock to wallhop?

Not strictly, but it removes a whole category of failure by making A always mean screen-left and D always mean screen-right. Enable shift lock switch in Roblox settings, then toggle it with Shift on PC, X on Xbox, or Square on PlayStation.

Where should I practise?

Wall Hop Practice for setup and fundamentals, since it guarantees every obstacle is possible. Wall Hop 1 - 100 Studs to measure your reliable gap width. Stage Chart for Wallhop Beginners if you want graded stages with consolidation plateaus every ten.
