Drill 4 — Width Calibration

Find the widest gap you clear nine times out of ten. That number is your benchmark, and turns 'I'm inconsistent' into something measurable.

Pass criteria

A written reliable width and ceiling width, established over ten-attempt samples.

Before you start

  • Drill 3 passed from both sides

Setup

  • Use Wall Hop 1 - 100 Studs, which lays out gaps by width from 1 stud to 100. This drill needs a measurable axis and that map is the only one that provides one.
  • Have somewhere to write numbers down. Memory is not adequate here.

The drill

    Start well below your limit

    Pick a width you are confident about. You want to begin with success so you are measuring skill rather than warming up.

  2. 2

    Run ten attempts and record the result

    Ten two-hop climbs at that width. Write down how many succeeded. Ten out of ten means move up.

  3. 3

    Step up two studs and repeat

    Move to the next width, run another ten, record again. Keep going until your success rate drops below nine out of ten.

    Record your reliable width

    The widest gap where you hit nine or ten out of ten is your reliable width. This is the only number in this curriculum worth tracking.

    Note your ceiling separately

    Also record the widest gap you managed even once. The gap between reliable and ceiling tells you how much of your ability is consistency versus reach.

    Re-measure weekly

    Same map, same protocol, once a week. Daily measurement is noise; weekly is signal.

Troubleshooting

Success rate jumps around unpredictably between widths.

Cause: Ten attempts is a small sample and fatigue skews it.

Fix: Take short breaks between widths, and re-run any width that gives a surprising result.

Reliable width is far below your ceiling.

Cause: You have reach but not consistency.

Fix: Practise at your reliable width, not your ceiling. Consistency is built below your limit, not at it.

The number does not improve week to week.

Cause: Practising at your ceiling rather than just below it, or not practising enough volume.

Fix: Spend most of your practice one or two studs below reliable width, where you can accumulate clean repetitions.

What is a good reliable width?

There is no universal figure, because jump power and gravity differ between games. The number is only meaningful compared against your own previous measurements in the same place.

Why nine out of ten rather than best-ever?

Because best-ever is luck and nine out of ten is skill. Towers require the latter.
